A few months back I received a phone call from Sally Cornelson, Director of Joyland Daycare. She had the idea of offering her children a summer drum camp. I was very interested, so yesterday, July 7, 2010 was day one of a weekly drum camp for the children of Joyland Daycare. Listen to highlights of the first day of the drum camp. 
I was working in my studio the other day as I waited for my next student to arrive. I had a lesson plan in mind, that included snare drum exercises and drum set work. However, I would end up abandoning that plan for djembes, congas, cabasas, surdos, and shakers… 
David Hughes discusses how a simple little melody was created, performed and recorded. “A young boy, filled with smiles and laughter, runs through knee deep muddy water as he chases his big brother. Minutes pass, the two boys run to shore and pick up a large net. Together they pull the net into the water, drag it out about ten yards, carve a large u-turn and drag it back to shore. As the net makes it’s way out of the water…” 
Here is a podcast about a composition project I did with first and second grade students at Westlawn Elementary. I wrote extensively about this project in another post. “I had the opportunity to teach some amazing students this year through the Mobile Symphony’s Preludes music program. This program is designed to give first and second graders weekly instruction in basic music concepts, and I had a blast working with the children at Westlawn Elementary! |
